There are 4 different types of events that can be created in CERVIS. Please note that all types may not be available depending on the edition of CERVIS being used.
The 4 Event Types:
Normal Event:
For normal events, all volunteers start and end at the same time and everyone has the same job to do. Normal Events will be posted online to your Event Registration webpage for volunteer registration. For example, if your opportunity is volunteering at a homeless shelter from 8am – 11am and you need 20 volunteers, then you want to create a Normal Event.
Time Slot Event:
This type of event is perfect for volunteer opportunities that require people to sign up for different shifts. These shifts can be at different times or they can all be at the same time, but each shift is doing something different. For example, if your organization has volunteered to ring bells for the Salvation Army Red Kettle Campaign from 8am to 8pm and you want volunteers to sign up for 2 hour shifts, then you will want to create a Time Slot Event. You could also use the Time Slot event type for a neighborhood clean-up where you create 3 shifts, all at the same time, but all doing something different (mowing yards, painting fences, and raking/weeding). Time Slot Events will be posted online to your Event Registration webpage for volunteer registration.
Custom Event:
A Custom Event requires the same amount of information as a Normal Event, however, it allows you to also add custom fields that are important to your specific event. For example, if your volunteer event is Park Clean-Up and you want to ask each of your volunteers who register for this event if they have a pick-up truck that can be used for this project to haul away debris, then you will want to create a Custom Event with custom fields asking them this question. You have several different types of custom fields that you can create for this type of event. Custom Events will be posted online to your Event Registration webpage for volunteer registration.
Service Project:
Service Projects are used to track and manage volunteer service hours for specific projects/programs that are on-going and not necessarily associated with a specific date and time. Service Projects allow volunteers to input their own service hours as they occur, either online, through a sign-in console on-location, on even using their own mobile device. For example, if your organization has an ongoing mentoring program where adults meet with and mentor teenagers at different times each week, then you will want to create a Service Project. Instead of establishing a normal event every time a mentor and teen meet, volunteers will be able to log in weekly and record the date and number of hours they spent mentoring their teenager. Additionally, Service Project opportunities will be posted on their own Service Project webpage, different than your Event Registration webpage, however, you can choose to have your Service Projects also displayed on your Event Listing Page.
