Ability to Directly Remove Assigned Checklist Items

There's what I assume is a bug with how checklist items work within the system. 

At the moment, you can't remove an assigned, overdue or expired checklist item from someone's profile. If you want to do so, you have to first mark that checklist item as completed and then remove it.

Can this be fixed so that you can directly remove a checklist item no matter what its status is?
