I need more options for member status besides "active" and "inactive." Things are not that cut and dried in some situations.

The built-in "Status" field in the system is tied to specific functionality within the system, so there is not the ability to dynamically add or remove items. If you need to track custom status information, you can just create a new custom profile field and include any options you need.
