    Hi Kathleen,

Thanks for your suggestion.  The age group and birth date options are really intended to be used as a "one or the other" type functionality.  We include the option to track birth date, for organizations that want to specifically track the exact age of a volunteer and the age group option for those organizations that just want a general grouping of age range.  These options are really not intended to be used both at the same time because if you are tracking a volunteer's exact birth date, there there is really no reason to track their age group as well.

Do you have any specific scenarios in which both birth date and age group are needed?

We look forward to hearing back from you.

Our searches tend to use the age range feature. Again, if the volunteer’s age range changes due to the year of birth then our query is off. For instance, today I did a search of volunteers 18 and older (along with other parameters). I did not want high school students. Since not every student indicates student as their ‘occupation’ or even a school name, a number of youth who are seniors in high school came up on the list. This meant I had to open each profile to verify whether the information was for an adult or student. With over 700 volunteers that is time consuming. If the system would automatically change a volunteer’s age range based on their birth date it would simplify reports. Additionally, some people inadvertently click on the wrong age range. Finally the system should not allow the current year to be used as a birth year. We use the birth date to pull volunteers with a birthday in the upcoming month so as to send birthday wishes, but again only want to send the birthday wishes to adults.

    Hi Kathy,

That's exactly the point I was trying to get at.  If you are tracking the volunteer's birth date, then you can use the advanced search to find volunteers who are over 18 by searching based on their birth date instead of based on their age group.  In your example, since you are tracking birth date, there is no reason to even have the age group field enabled at all.  It is redundant information, there is no reason to track both the age group and the birth date.

The system does not allow the volunteer to enter the current year for their birth date.  If a volunteer enters any date within the previous 1 year, they will get an error.

Not everyone includes their birth date and we do not make this mandatory.
