Is it possible for a volunteer to set their initial password when they create their profile instead of making them click on the "Don't know password" link to have a temporary password emailed to their account?
No, this is not possible.
For a volunteer to create a volunteer profile within CERVIS and to register for their first event, a user password is not required.
For a volunteer to access their CERVIS profile after initial profile creation, they are required to enter a temporary password. A volunteer can receive their first temporary password either from the Profile Creation Confirmation Message with the variable "##password##", or by using use the "Don't know password" link on the login page to have the system generate a temporary login and send it to the volunteer via email. The reason why we require a password email after the initial account creation is that it provides a way for our system to verify the email address being used by the volunteer. This is an important data security component of the system. To achieve the same effect, other systems you may have used will send out an activation link via email that must be clicked on before volunteers can access the system. Our approach is to combine the verification email and the password reset email together to create a more streamlined process. We are always looking for ways to improve the volunteer process and experience when using CERVIS, and although our process is not as common as others, we feel that this is the best way to ensure a good volunteer experience while keeping volunteer information secure.
It is possible for CERVIS users with the "Administrator" system access level to set an initial temporary for any volunteer, but this should only be done when the identity of the volunteer can be positively identified via other means.
